Marie De Decker, an artist who specializes in contemporary gilding since 2021. In 2023 she discovered this amazing collection from the ancient tradition of mummy portraits or Fayum portraits. These realistic paintings were created on thin wood panels and were used to cover the faces of mummified bodies in Roman Egypt.
In contrast to the typical hard coffin of wood or cartonnage associated with classical mummies, Roman mummies were wrapped in cloth, with linen shrouds or intricate patterns of linen strips. This unique mummification practice was primarily concentrated in and around the Fayum Basin, giving the portraits their name, and dates back to between the 1st and 3rd century AD. Out of the approximately 900 known portraits, nearly all have been separated from their mummified bodies.
Marie De Decker's contemporary approach to gilding pays homage to this ancient practice while bringing it into the present day. By incorporating various techniques and materials such as different types of gold leaf and photo prints, Marie creates unique and vibrant works of art that blur the line between the past and the present.
