MARIE DE DECKER IN L’ESSENTIEL

Photography: Vincent Lescaut
Interview: Nicolas Martin

In November 2024, L’Essentiel published a feature on Marie De Decker entitled Marie Turns Gold into Art. Written by Nicolas Martin and photographed by Vincent Lescaut, the article traces her journey and the gradual evolution of her practice, from photography towards sculpture and contemporary gilding.

The feature presents gold not as a simple finishing element, but as a material capable of constructing form. Within her openwork sculptures, it becomes line, structure, and presence in space, while light and shadow extend the work beyond its physical materiality.

Marie De Decker also discusses the sources that run through her practice: organic forms, recurring motifs of feathers and scales, her Flemish and Fulani heritage, and her attention to materials that carry a history. The feature reveals how traditional gilding techniques are transformed through experimentation.

This encounter with L’Essentiel was one of the first media portraits devoted to the development of this new sculptural language. It offers an insight into the gestures, materials, and research that precede the emergence of the works.
