Sculptural Assemblages

At times, Marie De Decker chooses objects charged with a former life—fine wooden boxes, an eighteenth-century baptismal ewer, a lacemaker’s lamp—and questions what they carry. Her gesture and the use of gilding reveal their stories, allowing them to be transmitted anew.

Some of these pieces are created on commission, in the tradition of family heirlooms. In such cases, the materials themselves are selected in relation to the roots of the person for whom the work is created.
