Maison à Part has published a portrait of Marie De Decker. Written by Sonia Taourghi, “Working with Gold as a Language” explores the connections between her background in photography, her sculptural practice and the cultural traditions that inform her work.

From her early portraits to her suspended filigree sculptures, the same attention endures: capturing the vitality of a presence and giving it lasting form. Light guides this exploration, revealing materials, giving depth to forms and extending the work into space.

The story leads to Poudre d’Or, Mauritius. The mangrove nurtures her observation of living forms and their interdependence. Fishing nets, collected and transformed before being worked with gold, carry the memory of this place.

The article also explores her Flemish and Fulani heritage, where textile traditions meet the history of gold in West Africa.

Marie De Decker also reflects on her encounters with the public. Once a work leaves the studio, new ways of seeing allow its story to unfold.
